Customer Background

Cachendo provides information technology support for educational technology needs for DODEA/DDESS Ft. Bragg, NC. Based on school curriculums, our services include software deployment, PC deployment, PC imaging, patch updates, and network infrastructure support. The vast majority of these requests are addressed remotely through a deployment console called Altiris. Periodically, there is a requirement from headquarters in Washington, DC to update software versions. These mandates are called IAVA’s or Information Assurance Vulnerability Acceptance.

Scope of Work

The program required an upgrade to Adobe Professional which is over 2 GB of installed data. In order to complete this install, any previous version would need to be uninstalled first. The challenge was that jobs were failing due to lack of network bandwidth when attempting to deploy the updated version of Adobe Pro., regardless of the fact that the jobs were scheduled to run over night when network usage is minimal. The software required a manual install to the administrative staff during the winter break.  The site supervisor began downloading the 1.4GB of software from the network in order to copy on to CD for manual installs which lasted approximately 3-4 hours.

Solution

Cachendo suggested a freeware software program called Teracopy, which minimizes the amount of time it takes to copy or move software from one location to another. Copying of the same 1.4GB folder and was complete within 5-8 minutes. This process was also offered as a remote service from an administrator account, installation and download of both the file copying software and the Adobe Pro program with minimal amount of time. Each of these installs were completed within a 20-30 minute time frame without having to physically access each PC, which would not have been logistically feasible during the school holiday break. The solution saved many valuable man hours by utilizing the ability to install on multiple PC’s simultaneously.
